I appreciate you sharing these resources -- as a Congolese person, I am critical of what is considered to be a resource on DRC -- people online are largely sharing books & documentaries by non Congolese people & not taking into account that such sources are colonial & do not help in building solidarity with Congolese people.
I wouldnβt recommend Cobalt Red or other history books on Congo written by non Congolese people & encourage people to read this review of Cobalt Red & to read books on Congo by Congolese authors.
thank you so much Gloria, I appreciate your insight and fully agree with you, I should have been more careful to amplify Congolese-written resources and narratives and will be more thoughtful and aware of this erasure in the future.
I replaced the quote from Cobalt Red with a quote from the first book you mentioned and I added in the recommendation for the second book as well. This will appear in the online version vs. the email one. I love the piece you shared -- it is so powerful in how it dissects why Cobalt Red perpetuates a colonial and western savior narrative, uses unethical practices and erases the complexity of Congolese lives.
I look forward to reading the books you shared, thank you for your truth telling & thank you for being here!
Although friends of congo offers great ressources. They are not a safe space for congolese youth. There has been SA allegations against their spokesperson Kambale Musavuli by young congolese women in the diaspora ehile organizing with FOTC. They also have a reputation of using and leaving Congolese youth activist in congo to fend for themselves specially once theyβve been ousted from their congo du to government threats.
Look up @genocost and gomactif on IG these are congolese grassroots organizations to support that focus on the crisis.
Thank you so much, I didn't know this, I will remove them from the list that appears online (unfortunately it will still be in the email version). I appreciate you!
Thank you for sharing this info. Do you know where I can find more info about the SA allegations within Friends of the Congo? I will be supporting Focus Congo instead and would like to refer others to do the same ππΎ
- index palestine : an account that shows social, cultural and art institutions that are not supportive of palestine
- palestine solidarity uk; if anyone here lives in the uk, this account shows protests that happens in big cities especially london and dates, which helps us to join
Thank you Ayanda for your hard work as always; I am especially taken by Panashe Chigumadzi's essay about reparations and the (necessary, daunting) rearrangement of the world as it is. the white, wealthy "reason" that has built the West is not at all acceptable -- what is "rational" is not always right. I'm going to keep exploring these resources & reimagining the world. thank you <3
